Bangladesh clean sweep world champion England 3-0 in T20 series on Tuesday

Bangladesh on Tuesday completed one of the most memorable performances in T20 history with a 3-0 clean sweep of world champions England. Having already clinched the three-match series by winning the opening two matches, Bangladesh produced a scintillating performance to beat England by 16 runs in the third T20I.

Chasing 159, England were 100/1 in 13 overs and were favorites to register a consolation win before going home. And then there was a surprise collapse after which the well-established pair of Dawid Malan (53) and skipper Jos Buttler (40) made a comeback in successive balls with the score standing steady at 100.

England could not recover from the double blow and ended with 142/6 in 20 overs.

Bangladesh captain Shakif Al Hasan was baffled by the result, but pointed to one aspect of his team’s performance: their fielding and added how the aim was to become the best fielding team in Asia.

Everyone saw our fielding in these three matches. We bowled out England, who themselves are a good fielding team. This is a big tick mark. Shakib said after the match, when I consider every aspect, the biggest improvement is in our fielding.

“We should always field well, but we have set a target to be the best fielding team in Asia. After this performance, I don’t think we are far behind.”

Bangladesh were put in to bat first as they made a steady start thanks to a solid partnership between openers Liton Das (73) and Ronnie Talukdar. Najmul Shanto then scored an unbeaten 47 to take the final total to 158/2.

He said, ‘We did not know how many runs are enough on this pitch. So we were very open minded, Shakib said. “We first thought 140 was a good score. Then we reached a stage when we thought 170-180 would be our total. We didn’t score much in the last five. But we batted well in the powerplay and middle overs “

They have got seven or eight quality bowlers so we had to struggle at least once in the innings. The way Ronnie and Liton started, and then Shanto and Liton built the innings, especially their running between the wickets, it was brilliant. The way he converted one into two and two into three, he put England under pressure.”
