Weightlifters Vikas Thakur, Venkat Rahul Ragala qualify for Commonwealth Games 2022

Indian lifters Vikas Thakur and Venkat Rahul Ragala sealed their place in the Commonwealth Games by winning gold and bronze medals respectively in the men’s 96kg event at the Singapore Weightlifting International here on Sunday.

India finished its campaign in the event with eight medals, including six gold and one silver and bronze. All the Indian lifters who took part in the competition qualified for the Commonwealth Games including Olympic silver medalist Mirabai Chanu in their new 55kg weight category.

Thakur, a two-time Commonwealth Games medalist, finished at the top of the podium, lifting 339kg (151kg+188kg), competing in the three-lifter field.

In the 85kg category, reigning Commonwealth Games champion Ragla put on a best effort of 328kg (146kg+188kg) to claim the third spot.

Australia Ridge Barredo won the silver medal by lifting 336 kg (149 kg + 187 kg).

Both Thakur and Ragal qualified for the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham later this year. The Singapore Weightlifting International is a qualifying event for the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.

The top eight lifters in each weight category in the current tournament will directly qualify for the 2022 Commonwealth Games.
