third extended deadline

The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) did not notify the CAA, 2019 rules till January 9, the third extended deadline after the Act was passed.

The note states that the Act was passed by Parliament on December 11, 2019 and since then the Center has extended the dates for formulation of rules on several occasions. This suggests that it is important not only for the refugees but also for the whole of West Bengal.

The release date on January 10 was released by Mohit Roy, the coordinator of SAIL. talking to Hindu Mr Roy blamed the BJP-led government at the Center for its failure to make rules.

“It does not take more than a few days to formulate the rules. despite being a member of the party [BJP]I will hold the Center responsible for the delay. For me the interest of the refugees is paramount,” he said. Mr Roy, an academic who worked on the state’s refugees, said the Act would impact at least one crore people who had come to West Bengal after 1972.

Differences with Matua leadership

The development comes at a time when the West Bengal unit of the BJP is facing differences with the Matua leadership, a sect of Bangladeshi Hindus who live in the border areas, demanding the implementation of the CAA. The demands raised by the Matua leaders include representation in party committees and implementation of the CAA.

The BJP had fought the assembly elections last year on a promise to implement the CAA. Senior leaders, including Home Minister Amit Shah, had promised to implement it when the COVID-19 situation improves.
