It is for the first time that the West Bengal government has introduced a chapter on sexual abuse of children along with a detailed study of the POCSO Act in the state board syllabus. Here we have introduced a chapter on the subject of class 7 physical education. Previously, it was in the form of rhymes.

According to sources in the education department, the aim is to make children more aware about their bodies, rights, their physical safety and what is not a good touch. This time the board has tried to include information and clarification on various legal aspects of sexual abuse. Sources say that this inclusion has been done through various illustrations which will help the children.

In total, about four pages of information on sexual abuse have been included. The chairman of the curriculum committee told News18.com, “Whatever we found necessary from the children’s point of view has been included in the curriculum.” The form of sexual abuse has also been clearly introduced. Not only how to report sexual abuse, what to inform the parents has also been explained.

In 2017, “Good Touch” and “Bad Touch” were included in the curriculum. Now the board is brainstorming on how teachers will teach sexual abuse. Sources in the education department said that teachers will be given special training for this. The state government believes that incidents of sexual abuse have come to the fore in various schools, so it was the need of the hour.

Meanwhile, Maharashtra Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis had said that the state government would ask the schools to set up CCTV cameras are a means of preventing sexual Fighting with girl students. “Some rich schools have CCTV networks. But we will try and direct aided and unaided schools to install CCTV cameras as a preventive measure. This would naturally discourage some people from indulging in such acts, Fadnavis said.
