West Bengal Municipal Elections: Polling in 108 municipalities on Sunday

Elections in 108 municipalities in West Bengal will be held on Sunday from 7 am to 5 pm. About 95 lakh voters will exercise their franchise to elect ward representatives and mayors. Opposition parties alleged that the attacks against him have intensified in the last 24 hours. Out of 2,276 wards spread over 108 municipalities, the ruling Trinamool Congress has already won four unopposed.

In North 24-Parganas Kamarhati where TMC MLA Madan Mitra is the party’s candidate, bombs were hurled outside the residence of CPM candidate from Ward 25 on Friday night. Reportedly, attacks were also carried out in Barrackpore.

A delegation of Left-wing women’s organization went to the State Election Commission’s office on Saturday and demanded the switching on of closed-circuit television cameras during polling.

In municipal bodies, including the Calcutta Municipal Corporation, where elections were held earlier, CCTV cameras were found to be either not working or concentrated elsewhere. Some candidates and their polling agents were assaulted during polling in Calcutta.

The CPI(M) has also demanded that Howrah (Rural) Superintendent of Police Soumya Ray be removed from maintaining law and order during the elections as she was allegedly involved in the Anees Khan murder case. Ray is also the husband of a TMC MLA from South 24-Parganas.

The elections to the Howrah Municipal Corporation are yet to be announced, as the process of defining Bally from Howrah is yet to be completed. In Howrah district, voting will be held only in Uluberia Municipality.

In Darjeeling district, voting will be held only in Darjeeling Municipality, while in other districts voting will be held in many municipal bodies.

Voting will be held in six municipalities in Cooch Behar. Polling will be held in 25 municipalities in North 24 Parganas.

Barrackpore sub-division is considered the most volatile as it has regularly witnessed violence since the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.

Elections will be held in 12 municipalities in Hooghly district. Violence was witnessed in the region during the 2021 assembly elections. Polling will be held in seven municipalities in Murshidabad, 10 for Nadia and five for Birbhum.

Polling will be held in six municipalities in South 24 Parganas, including Diamond Habar, which is also the Lok Sabha seat of Trinamool national secretary Abhishek Banerjee.
