With the reopening of school campuses after an extended summer vacation, the West Bengal Board of Primary education Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, state-run and aided institutions have issued a set of guidelines to conduct an assessment session to assess the academic progress of students in online learning for the last two years. A board official said that the evaluation will be done in phases.

Anand Handa, an office-bearer of the West Bengal Primary Teachers’ Association, pointed out that school campuses were out of bounds for students due to the pandemic, with many children missing lessons due to network issues or the economic situation in homes, especially in rural areas.

Handa said students are coming in large numbers after classes reopen on June 27, and the evaluation exercise will help teachers better understand the headway made by students, board secretary RC Bagchi said in a notice. There will be summative assessment to evaluate the performance of the students… which will be preceded by formative assessment.” He also said that the syllabus prescribed for each subject has to be followed.

According to the notice, the first offline summative assessment will be conducted by the schools between July 2 and 12, the second in September and the third in December. There will be a preparatory session before each summative assessment.

Summative assessment is used to evaluate a student’s learning, skills and academic progress at the end of a given period, while the initial session takes into account the methods teachers use to deliver lessons . In addition to the mid-term and final examinations, there will be a phase-wise evaluation. According to the board official, the method of summative and preliminary evaluation of the students will be decided by the respective schools.
