West Bengal: TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee to contest from Bhawanipur

The Election Commission has announced that it will hold by-elections to three vacant seats in the West Bengal Assembly and one assembly constituency in Odisha on September 30.

The counting of votes will take place on October 3.

Veteran politician Sovandeb Chattopadhyay stepped down as TMC MLA from Bhabnipur, giving Banerjee a chance to become a member of the state legislative assembly by contesting a by-election.

Chattopadhyay had defeated BJP’s actor-politician Rudranil Ghosh from Bhawanipur by nearly 28,000 votes.

The notification for the Bhabnipur by-election will be issued on September 6, with which the nomination process will begin. The last date for filing nominations is September 13, while the scrutiny of nomination papers will take place on September 14. September 16 is the last date to withdraw from the electoral battle.
