Western Digital says production at Japanese facilities is being impacted

Western Digital Corp said on Wednesday that some materials at two of its manufacturing units in Japan, operated by joint venture partner Kioxia Holdings Corp., were contaminated and would result in reduced availability of flash storage devices.

According to the company’s current assessment, there will be a reduction of at least 6.5 exabytes in the availability of flash storage. One exabyte is equal to one billion gigabytes.

Western Digital is working closely with Kioxia to implement the necessary measures that will restore facilities to normal operating conditions as soon as possible.

Kioxia, one of the largest global producers of flash memory and solid-state storage, is a leading supplier of Western Digital. The merger talks were going on between the two companies last year but they stalled.
