Brain fog refers to a state in which brain activity slows down a bit and it feels like a fog covering our thoughts.

Have you ever wondered why we often struggle to remember things? For instance, when you are busy doing some important work and suddenly, your brain fogs up and you forget what you are doing. If you think you’re alone, then don’t worry. Many people around the world have the same problem and it is referred to as brain fog. It refers to a state in which brain activity slows down a bit and it feels like a fog covering our thoughts. According to Kunal Bahrani, a doctor from Uttar Pradesh, the inability to understand what is going on or suddenly forgetting something is quite a normal problem. He stated that there are various reasons for this and people of all ages are affected by this problem. Let’s take a look at the reasons.

Overload of information

One of the reasons is the overload of information. When there is an overload of information, it occupies our brain. This can be tiring as the brain is bombarded with information which affects our ability to observe properly and retain the information correctly.

Digital Devices

Doctors also suggest that digital devices can be another reason. As per experts, before digital devices, we used to do calculations mentally. In fact, we used to memorise phone numbers as well. When we put our brain to use, it works actively. Now, we majorly depend on our cell phones or other digital devices for reminders for watching movies or playing games; or even for calculation, to listen to music and much more. Hence, the habit of thinking and memorising has almost been lost.

Chronic Stress

Experts also suggest that chronic stress can increase blood pressure which can weaken the immune system and cause mental fatigue, which can lead to brain fog.

Lack of sleep

Lack of proper sleep can also be a contributing factor to brain fog. Poor quality of sleep can interfere with brain functioning and lead to poor concentration and thoughts.

Underlying medical condition

Look out for underlying medical conditions as well. There can be various reasons for brain fog like anaemia, depression, diabetes, migraine, Alzheimer’s disease, hypothyroidism, autoimmune diseases like lupus or even COVID-19.

How to deal with brain fog?

It is extremely necessary to be well-rested. Make sure you get 8 to 9 hours of sleep every night. Try to engage yourself in stress management like yoga or pilates. You can also exercise or play your favourite sport. Make sure to engage your brain in thinking, puzzle solving and other abilities. Also eat protein-rich fruits, and vegetables and include healthy fats in your diet.
