BJP leader Uma Bharti on Wednesday said her party has already punished spokesperson Nupur Sharma for her prophet’s remarks. He also took a dig at those who threatened to kill the former BJP spokesperson.

“Our party punished the spokesperson, and the MEA handled the situation well on the reaction of Muslim countries, but we can’t throw him away” [Nupur Sharma] For the wolves,” Uma Bharti told India Today.

Nupur Sharma was suspended by the BJP after facing stiff backlash from the Gulf countries, claiming that the views of “marginalized elements” did not represent the views of the government.

Nupur Sharma received death threats as the controversy escalated. Now, Uma Bharti has urged the Center to provide adequate security, claiming that some people have placed a reward of Rs 1 crore on Sharma’s remarks of the Prophet during a TV debate.

Bharti said, “The threat to Nupur Sharma is not Indian culture. It all started during the UP elections when every political party spewed venom and a tense atmosphere was created.”

On June 7, the BJP also issued a directive stating that now only official spokespersons and panelists would be allowed to attend TV debates. The media cell has been charged with appointing the spokesperson for the show.

Spokespersons going on TV have been asked not to speak about religious symbols.
