Ravichandran Ashwin was a key figure for Team India as the hosts beat Australia 2-1 to retain the Border Gavaskar Trophy 2023. Ashwin took 25 wickets in four matches, and was named Player of the Series along with Ravindra Jadeja, who picked up 22 wickets.

While the Indian pair of spin wizards hunted in pairs, they were unable to prevent a draw in the final match of the series in Ahmedabad.

After India posted 571 in reply to Australia’s 480 in their first innings, Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschagne held the fort as they looked to get Australia a draw.

Captain Rohit Sharma turned to other options after Ashwin and Jadeja proved ineffective in the final session of the fifth day. Batsmen Shubman Gill and Cheteshwar Pujara were seen swinging their arms, leading to a banter between Pujara and Ashwin.

It was Ashwin who was the first to poke fun at his teammate, sharing a picture of Pujara twirling his arm with a hilarious meme reference.

After the fourth Test ended in a draw, Ashwin tweeted with a laughing emoji, “What do I do, quit the job?”

Pujara gave his witty reply, alluding to the Nagpur Test when the veteran spinner came out to bat as night watchman at 1 down.

“No. It was just to say thanks for going 1 down in Nagpur,” Pujara replied but Ashwin would have the last laugh.

“Your intent is appreciated but wonder how this is a comeback,” Ashwin retorted leaving netizens in splits.

Interestingly, Pujara had bowled one over and Gill had bowled just one ball of his second when Smith decided to shake hands with Rohit Sharma and end the contest in a tie.

On Day 5, Australia resumed their innings with all wickets in hand, but they lost nightwatchman Matthew Kuhnmann early to Ashwin.

Travis Head and Marnus Labuschagne though stitched a crucial partnership to take the match towards a draw as Australia finished with a total of 175/2, but it mattered little.
