WhatsApp working on Channels feature: What is it and how will it benefit users

WhatsApp is a popular messaging app used by billions of people around the world. Meta keeps on updating the app with new features to enhance the user experience. The company is now reportedly working on the ability to create channels on WhatsApp.

Online platform WaBetaInfo spots Channels feature in latest whatsapp beta Android 2.23.8.6 is available for update on Play Store. The feature will be “a tool for broadcasting information, allowing users to easily receive useful updates from others they wish to receive updates from.”

The report states that the channel on WhatsApp Status will be available as a separate and optional section within the tab. The section will be called ‘Updates’. In the future, the Status tab will have a new interface for status updates.

On the privacy front, WhatsApp channel will not reveal user’s phone numbers and other information. Such details will remain hidden. But, messages received within a channel will not be end-to-end encrypted. In case you are unaware, private messages shared on WhatsApp – both individual and group chats offer end-to-end encryption. This means that no one can read these messages except the sender and the recipient.

“Since this is an optional extension of private messaging and is not pivoted to a public social network, people are always in control of which channels they choose to subscribe to, and no one will be able to see who they subscribe to.” follow, regardless of whether they’ve added them as a contact or not,” says WaBetaInfo.

Additionally, WhatsApp will support channel handles so that users can search for a specific WhatsApp channel by entering their username within WhatsApp. This will eliminate the need to navigate to external websites.

As mentioned above, Channels are under development and will be released in future updates of WhatsApp.
