Eid-ul-Adha 2022: Muslims around the world celebrated Ramadan earlier this year, leading to the celebration of Eid-ul-Fitr. And now soon they will celebrate the second Eid of the year, Eid-ul-Adha, also known as Eid-ul-Zuha, Bakra-Eid or Bakrid. Eid-ul-Zuha commemorates the sacrifice of Prophet Ibrahim.
Eid-ul-Zuha is derived from the Arabic words Id, which means festival, and Zuha which comes from Uzayya which means sacrifice. Celebrated on the 10th day of the Islamic month of Zul Hijjah, Bakrid is celebrated for about three days. This year the celebration of Eid-ul-Zuha will start from Sunday, July 10.
According to Islamic beliefs, this day is celebrated in memory of the sacrifice that Prophet Ibrahim made because of his strong belief in Allah. It is believed that Prophet Ibrahim had nightmares of sacrificing his son Prophet Ismail to God. When he told his nightmares to his son, he too agreed and asked his father to sacrifice him to God.
Inspired by their strong devotion and faith, Allah sent the angel Gabriel with a goat. Jibril informs Prophet Ibrahim that God is pleased with his devotion to him and asked him to replace his son with a goat. Hence, Id-ul-Zuha commemorates the sacrifice of Ibrahim’s own son Prophet Ismail to God.
On the day of Bakrid, Muslims around the world offer special prayers in mosques after the sun has fully risen. The Eid-ul-Adha prayer should be recited just before the sun enters the Zuhr time i.e. the afternoon prayer time. After the prayer, the Muslims attend the Khutba or sermon by the Imam.
Once people return home after attending special prayers, they wish each other Eid Mubarak and sacrifice goats and sheep. This animal sacrifice is known as Qurbani and is distributed among the poor. The subsequent festivities include eating delicious food, sharing joy with family, relatives and neighbours, and making donations.
