Why Congress won in Karnataka? Biocon chief Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw shared the tweet

The Indian National Congress party registered an emphatic victory in Karnataka on Saturday. In the 224-member legislature, the Congress won 135 seats against 66 for the BJP.

Biocon chairperson Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, who has been vocal about infrastructure issues in Karnataka’s capital Bengaluru, shared a tweet after the Congress won the election. The business tycoon attributed three key metrics that led to the victory of the Congress party in Karnataka.

Shaw wrote, “Woke up in Los Angeles to hear the news that @INCIndia has got a tremendous mandate from the people of Karnataka.” “Infrastructural development, economic prosperity and social harmony are the metrics that people will measure to elect their representatives”, he said.

The fortunes of the Congress party had historically fallen since it lost power at the national level to the BJP led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2014. The party has also struggled in several state assembly elections, winning only recently in Himachal Pradesh.

Moreover, the defeat in Karnataka is a rare setback for the BJP as Modi continues to be highly popular even after nine years in power.

Congress vote share rises to 42.88%; JD(S)’s stake came down to 13.29%. BJP’s vote share was 36%.

Many political experts have said that the Congress party won Karnataka because of an aggressive pro-poor campaign.

A campaign against corruption, bailout guarantees, and the consolidation of Muslim votes underpinned the Congress victory, which was also aided by an anti-incumbency wave against the BJP government.

The Congress also hailed the Bharat Jodo Yatra for the party’s success in party president Mallikarjun Kharge’s home state, with Rahul Gandhi-led winning 15 of the state’s 20 assembly constituencies.

The BJP suffered heavy losses in its stronghold of north Karnataka, a bastion of the Lingayat community that has traditionally supported it. Some rebels of BJP have won, while Lingayat candidates of Congress have also won in large numbers.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated the Congress for the victory and wished the party better efforts to fulfill the aspirations of the people.
