Why did a 12-year-old child plead with CM Nitish Kumar in a viral video that turned into political turmoil in Bihar

A 12 year old child is the latest sensation in Bihar politics. After a video of Sonu Kumar demanding education from Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar went viral on social media, political leaders of all parties have lined up at the student’s house.

In the video, Kumar, a resident of Kalyan Bigha village in Nalanda district, said, “Sir, give us the courage to stay. We are not allowed by our parents. Sir please give me some encouragement for my studies. My parents don’t allow me to study.”

Nitish Kumar is seen as having addressed the child’s demands and calls an officer to look into the matter. Interestingly, Nalanda district is also the native district of the Chief Minister.

“I demand that education should be provided to me. There is no proper education in government schools… My father drinks liquor and toddy, all the money goes to his liquor,” Sonu told reporters after his interaction with Kumar.

He also claimed that he pays tuition to earn income. However, his father Rannvijay Yadav, who is a milk vendor, takes away his income as well.

He further said that he tried to meet Nitish Kumar During his previous rallies, but could not interact with him in the past. He said that during this meeting, the CM assured him of admission in a school.

However, Sonu’s allegation addressed two major concerns in the state—the alcohol ban and the dismal state of education. Prohibition has been one of the key programs of Nitish Kumar, who had earlier promised to strictly enforce the ban on alcohol in the interest of ‘social values’ and stop domestic fighting. The opposition is claiming that the ban is not strictly enforced and liquor is sold illegally at exorbitant prices.

Secondly, educational infrastructure in the state has been a notorious issue and has been in the news for all the wrong reasons. The latest allegation adds to the pathetic condition of education in Bihar.

Days after the video went viral, Sonu Kumar was seen hosting political figures from the state.

Former Deputy CM of Bihar Sushil Kumar Modi met Sonu Kumar and promised admission in Navodaya School. He also promised Sonu a monthly stipend of Rs 2,000 till he passes the matriculation examination. BJP veteran Sushil Modi has been an ally of Nitish Kumar’s JD(U) in the state government.

‘Won’t Work Under You’

RJD leader and Lalu Prasad Yadav’s son Tej Pratap Yadav also talked to Sonu Kumar on a video call. However, it was an embarrassing moment for Yadav when Sonu gave him a scathing response to his request.

Tej Pratap asked Sonu whether he would become a doctor or an engineer. Sonu replied that he would become an IAS, to which Tej Pratap said, “When I come under the government, you will work under me as an IAS.” Sonu immediately replied and said, “Sir I cannot work under anyone.” Media reports claimed that after this reply, Tej Pratap immediately hung up the phone.

JAP leader Pappu Yadav, who was in the news for his relief work during Kovid-19, also reached Sonu’s house and gave him Rs 50,000 and promised lifelong help to the student.

Bollywood actor and philanthropist Sonu Sood also promised complete education and hostel arrangements for the child in a school in Patna.
