New Delhi:

Senior Congress leader P Chidambaram on Thursday said he feels “hurt and helpless” by the attack on his colleague Kapil Sibal’s house by some party supporters for questioning his leadership.

The former Union minister joined other veterans of the Group of 23, informally known as the G-23, in condemning the attack.

Other members of the group had written to party chief Sonia Gandhi last year demanding an organizational change, terming the attack as “organised hooliganism”.

Congress workers protested outside Mr. Sibal’s house and damaged a car after he questioned the party’s functioning and attacked the party leadership amid the fresh crisis in Punjab.

Senior leaders Ghulam Nabi Azad, Anand Sharma, Bhupinder Singh Hooda, Vivek Tankha and Raj Babbar were among those who rallied behind Mr. Sibal, with Mr. Sharma asking Ms. Gandhi to take strict action against those involved.

Former Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh also criticized the “attack” on Mr Sibal’s house by Congress workers, as he chose to “express views that were not suitable for the party leadership”.

This is not good for the party, Mr Singh said, adding that it is unfortunate that seniors are being “completely sidelined”, which is not good for the party.

Describing senior Congressmen as “ideologues” who were important for the party’s future, the former chief minister said in a statement that youth leadership should be promoted to implement the schemes, which senior leaders are best equipped to prepare. are equipped with.

Former Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha, Mr Azad also strongly condemned the “orchestrated hooliganism” at Mr Sibal’s residence.

Former Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda said, “It is not the culture of Congress to indulge in hooliganism outside Kapil Sibal’s residence last night.”
