Why Menstrual Cramps Are Especially Painful In Winter – News18

Increase your fluid intake during the winter season even if you do not feel thirsty.

Limited exposure to sunlight can lead to deficiency of vitamin D and increasing pain during the menstrual cycle.

Be it any season, period pain or menstrual cramps are always discomforting and irritating. However, during the cold season, the pain increases. Have you ever wondered why?

Menstrual cramps in winter may increase due to some of the following reasons –

– Constriction of arteries reduces the flow of blood.

– Another reason can be limited exposure to sunlight which can lead to deficiency of vitamin D and increase pain during the menstrual cycle.

– During winter, we tend to be lethargic and are not physically active. This can lead to increased pain during the period cycle.

– Another possible reason can be dehydration. Dehydration is quite common as water intake reduces and can cause muscle cramps including menstrual cramps.

Here are a few ways to manage period pain during the winter season –

Stay Warm

As the temperature dips, make sure you wear layered clothes to protect yourself from the cold wind. The warmer your body stays the better will be the flow of blood.

Hydration

Increase your fluid intake during the winter season even if you do not feel thirsty. If your body stays hydrated, it will be able to flush out the toxins and manage hormonal imbalance as well.

Heating Pad

Using a heating pad will help alleviate the pain and help you relax better.

Proper Diet

During periods, we crave certain kinds of food. However, instead of giving in to the craving, stay strict with your diet and eat proper vegetables and fruits which will reduce any kind of deficiency, and prevent bloating or indigestion.

Exercise

It is quite tempting to stay indoors when you are suffering from menstrual cramps. However, lack of physical activity will only increase the pain. Do light exercises such as walking or yoga to help relieve the cramps.

Soak In The Sun

It is important to step out in the sun so that you do not have a vitamin D deficiency. In case you are deficient, your doctor may consider giving you a supplement for it.

Wear Loose Clothes

Opt for loose–fitting clothes during your period cycle. Wear clothes that are not tied around the waist and abdomen or restrict the proper flow of blood in the body.
