Wild elephant that killed two in Karnataka caught

Several elephants, including a baby elephant, are yet to be captured, the official said.

Forest Department officials on Friday captured the elephant that killed two persons in Kadaba village of Dakshina Kannada district.

Deputy Conservator of Forests Dr. Dinesh Kumar YK told ANI, “We have successfully captured the elephant, which had killed two people.”

They said that several elephants, including a baby elephant, are yet to be captured, and that they will continue to conduct operations in the area.

Soon after the capture of the big animal, the local people of the area got into an argument with the forest department officials and insisted on capturing another elephant, claiming that it had been troubling them for a long time.

The officials assured to continue the action the next day as well. However, his attempt to convince the local people failed.

The locals reportedly resorted to violence, and started pelting stones at the police and forest authority and damaged two of their vehicles.

Officials said that so far seven people have been arrested in connection with the incident.

The incident of elephant attack took place in Meenadi area on February 20, in which two people including a girl were killed. The victims have been identified as Ranjita and Ramesh Rai.

According to the police, the wild elephant attacked Ranjitha while on her way to work, the other victim Ramesh Rai was also at the spot.

A day after the incident, forest officials launched ‘Operation Elephant’ in Kadaba area to capture the wild elephant.

The operation, which began on Tuesday morning, was carried out with the help of five other elephants from Nagarhole and Dubare camps.

Giving details of the campaign, Deputy Conservator Dr. Kumar said that a team of Forest Department personnel has been deployed and they are monitoring the movements of wild elephants with the help of drones.

The authorities have launched a detailed investigation into the incident of violence.

Based on the complaint of the Subzone Forest Officer, sections 143, 144, 147, 148, 341, 353, 332, 307, 427, 504, 506, and 149 of the IPC along with evasion and damage to property of Karnataka A case has been registered under prevention of Act, 1981 has been registered.

The officials were further probing the matter.
