This is a major change in Tripura’s political landscape as the Congress was the main opposition to the CPI(M)-led Left Front, which ruled the state for 25 years before being defeated by the BJP in 2018.

Barely 12 hours after the announcement of assembly elections in Tripura, former arch-rivals CPI(M) and Congress came together to finalize the seat-sharing formula as part of their poll strategy.

“We need to come together for the people of the state. There is virtually no democracy in the state. Congress MLA from Agartala Sudip Roy Barman, who is a former BJP minister, said, “We appeal to all democratic fronts to join our campaign for democracy.”

The CPI(M) and the Congress recently announced that they would contest the Tripura elections together. AICC general secretary Ajoy Kumar made the announcement after a meeting with CPI(M) state secretary Jitendra Chowdhary. Left Front convenor Narayan Kar was also present in the meeting held at the state headquarters of the CPI(M).

State Congress president Birjit Sinha and Chowdhary said, “We will do anything to uproot the undemocratic party BJP from the state.” “It is a big alliance for the state in the political fraternity.”

“BJP has started a reign of terror and more in Tripura. Money and muscle power are being used extensively and fearful voters are witness to this. This time we need to defeat it and hence all the democratic forces in the state should unite.”

The announcement marks a major change in the state’s political landscape as the Congress was the main opposition to the CPI(M)-led Left Front, which ruled the state for 25 years before being defeated by the BJP in 2018. Roy Burman said that there would be no party flag, only the tricolor would be hoisted as a symbol of unity and brotherhood. Chowdhary supported the demands of the Tipra Motha Dal but disagreed on the division of the state as it is geographically irrelevant.

Alliance talks are also going on with Tipra Motha president Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma. Pradyot Kishore asked a question Election commission of India On his assurance of free and fair elections in the state. In a tweet, he expressed his anguish over the increase in election-related violence just after the polling dates were announced.

An incident of political violence was reported from Tripura’s Majlispur constituency, following which the Congress alleged that 15 party workers, including AICC general secretary Ajay Kumar, were attacked by a group of “BJP-backed goons” during a bike rally. And the officers were injured. Police, however, said the attacks were carried out by unidentified miscreants in West Tripura district, and “10 party workers were injured”.

The ECI has ordered an inquiry into the incident and asked the Chief Electoral Officer of the state to obtain a report on the matter from the DGP through the Chief Secretary. The report has to be submitted by 3 pm on Friday (January 20).

Another incident, the murder of a Tipra Motha activist, was also reported from the poll-bound state. Tipra Motha Dal has accused BJP of carrying out this act. Police said the Tipra Motha leader, identified as Pranajit Namashudra of Surma assembly constituency, was returning home after a day’s work when he was attacked by unidentified miscreants. First his car was ransacked, after which he was dragged out of the vehicle and fatally assaulted on the head.
