Sania Mirza reaches second round of mixed doubles

India’s experienced Sania Mirza along with her partner Mate Pavik entered the second round of the mixed doubles event on Friday. In a hard-fought victory over David Vega Hernandez and Natela Zalamidze, the Indo-Croatian pair registered a 6-4 3-6, 7-6(3) win in the first round match.

The 35-year-old Indian ace failed to clear the mixed doubles third round at Wimbledon last year and will have a scintillating shot this year as she manages to keep India’s Wimbledon title hopes alive.

Mirza is likely to play in the final Wimbledon this year. He had earlier announced his retirement at the end of this season. He won his first doubles title with Martina Hingis in 2015.

Mirza and Czech’s Lucie Hardeka had earlier lost in the women’s doubles opening round.

In the video footage uploaded on the official Twitter handle of the championship, Mirza said that she is going to miss Wimbledon, but it is time to move on.

“There are some things in life that take priority over playing a tennis match and I am at that level now,” she said.

On the other hand, star player Rohan Bopanna has missed this year’s tournament. Bopanna recently participated in The Queen’s Club Championship in London and reached the semi-finals along with his teammate.

No tennis player from India has progressed to Wimbledon 2022 singles. Ramkumar Ramanathan and Yuki Bhambri were eliminated in the first qualification round of the tournament.
