Winter session of Parliament will be held from 4-22 December

Earlier Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi said that the session will have 15 sittings spread over 19 days.

“Winter Session, 2023 of Parliament will commence from 4th December and continue till 22nd December having 15 sittings spread over 19 days. Amid Amrit Kaal looking forward to discussions on Legislative Business and other items during the session,” he said.

Notably, on 3 December, the results of five state assembly elections will be declared (Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Mizoram and Telangana). The results of the assembly elections will have a major bearing on the session during which the government is keen to pass key bills.

The report of the Ethics Committee on the “cash-for-query” allegations against TMC MP Mahua Moitra will be tabled in Lok Sabha during the session.

The government will also present a bill to seek Parliament’s approval for adjustments to the Centre’s ₹35 trillion spending programme in the current fiscal, Mint reported.

Bills for GST appellate tribunals, spending likely in winter session

Another key bill pending in Parliament relates to the appointment of the chief election commissioner and election commissioners.

The bills to replace the IPC, CrPC and the Evidence Act may be taken up for consideration during the session.

The Winter Session of the Parliament will be held in the new building only. In September this year, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated a new Parliament building as part of his government’s grand plan to give a makeover to the British colonial-era architecture in New Delhi.

The new parliament complex is the centrepiece of a $2.4 billion project, equipped with modern technologies. It has a total of 1,272 seats in two chambers, nearly 500 more than the old building, and at least three times as much space to accommodate new lawmakers in the world’s largest democracy.

Last week, MPs raised concerns over cyber security in the new Parliament building and called upon banks to take adequate steps to secure the financial assets of the public at large.

The MPs also stressed the need to increase cyber security awareness in the country and called for developing a “cyber consciousness index” to gauge it.
