Wipro, Bajaj Finserv, HDFC Life, TCS among top gainers, losers today

Sensex and Nifty 50 jumped nearly a percent on Friday, and are currently shy of their lifetime highs. Sensex is comfortable near 63,400, while Nifty 50 is above the 18,820 level. Broad-based buying across indices, with strong upside in banking, capital goods, consumer durables, FMCG, and healthcare stocks lifted the benchmarks. Midcap and smallcap stocks also continued on their winning streak to touch new all-time highs.

Positive global cues were another key factor to keep bulls favoring domestic equities.

Sensex ended at 63,384.58, up by 466.95 points or 0.74%. Nifty 50 closed at 18,826 higher by 137.90 points or 0.74%.

The 30-scrip benchmark is now very close to its lifetime high of 63583.07, while the Nifty 50 is also a couple of points away from its historic high of 18,887.60.

On June 16th, a total of 2,130 stocks advanced, while 1,401 stocks declined and 125 stocks were unchanged. A total of 207 stocks hit a new 52-week high, and 19 stocks struck their fresh 1-year lows.

According to Vinod Nair, Head of Research at Geojit Financial Services, the domestic market rebounded with strong buying in banking, pharma, and consumer stocks, along with positive cues from global markets. The US market’s optimism was bolstered by better-than-expected retail sales, reflecting the robustness of the economy. Furthermore, jobless claims remain elevated and a decline in import prices raised hopes for a prolonged pause in interest rate hikes by the Fed, contradicting their announcement of potential future rate hikes made the previous day.
