With Centre’s nod, sugar exports will resume

According to the notification of the Food Ministry, the government on Saturday allowed export of 60 lakh tonnes of sugar on quota basis till May 31.

As per the notification, the ministry has allocated a uniform export quota of 18.23% of the three-year average production of the sweetener in the current sugar season.

Sugar mills can export by themselves or through exporters or can be swapped with the domestic sales quota of any other mill. The sugar season runs from October to September.

“In order to prevent uncontrolled exports of sugar or to ensure adequate availability of sugar for domestic consumption at reasonable prices, the Government has decided to allow export of sugar to an appropriate extent from 1st November to 31st May.” 2023,” it said.

According to official sources, the first installment of the quota has been allowed only till the end of May. Further quota allocation for exports will be decided on the basis of domestic sugar production.

Sugar production in the new 2022-23 season began in Maharashtra and Karnataka from October, while in Uttar Pradesh and rest of the sugarcane growing states, it will start within a week.

In the month of October alone, mills manufactured 4.05 lakh tonnes of sugar, down 14.73% from the year-ago period, according to the cooperative National Federation of Cooperative Sugar Factories Ltd.

The government had restricted sugar exports till the end of the 2021-22 season (October-September) to ensure adequate stocks for domestic consumption and prevent any increase in retail prices during the festive period.

According to official data, despite the restrictions, around 11 million tonnes of sugar was exported during the entire 2021-22 season.

Sugar production in the 2021-22 season stood at a record 35.92 million tonnes. Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh and Karnataka are the top three sugar producing states in the country.
