Women’s IPL by 2023; 4 exhibition games this season, says Sourav Ganguly

Mumbai : Women’s IPL may start by 2023, said Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) President Sourav Ganguly on Friday. Ganguly also mentioned that four exhibition games this season make a comeback after a gap of one year.

BCCI needs AGM’s nod to kickstart Women’s Indian Premier League (IPL) next session.

“It (full women’s IPL) has to be approved by the AGM. We are planning to start it by next year,” BCCI President Sourav Ganguly told reporters after the IPL Governing Council meeting here on Friday.

The board was earlier criticized for not starting the women’s IPL. The board is planning five or six teams in the inaugural edition.

At least four men’s IPL franchises are reportedly interested to know from the BCCI what is on the table if they want to invest in the WIPL.

IPL president Brijesh Patel also clarified that there will be four matches this season around the men’s IPL play-offs for the three women’s teams.

“There will be four matches with three teams around playoff time,” Patel said after the meeting.

After the second part of the IPL was moved to the UAE due to the pandemic, exhibition games were not held last year. However, he was staged in the UAE in 2020 when the IPL trailblazers won the title.

According to Patel, there will be five or six teams in the women’s IPL but again this will require the approval of the general body.

The most likely location for the Women’s Exhibition Games is Pune.

The IPL begins on Saturday with defending champions Chennai Super Kings taking on Kolkata Knight Riders at the iconic Wankhede Stadium.
