Jhulan Goswami’s historic achievement and Meghna Singh’s late gallantry with the ball were overshadowed by Indian batsmen’s inconsistency as the Mithali Raj-led side suffered their second loss in an ICC Women’s World Cup league stage match while defending champions England returned to winning ways after three. Consistent defeats in the ongoing tournament.

Goswami created history as she became the first woman cricketer to take 250 wickets in an ODI when she dismissed England opener Tammy Beaumont for 1 at the Bay Oval. Goswami is also the only bowler in women’s ODI history to take more than 200 wickets.

England rode on captain Heather Knight’s heroic half-century to chase down the 135-run target and ended their three-match losing streak after India made a below-par effort to bundle out 134 runs on Wednesday.

Last game’s centurion Smriti Mandhana (35) top-scored while wicketkeeper-batsman Richa Ghosh scored 33 before England bowled India out in 36.2 overs by opting to field first.

This was in stark contrast to India’s performance in their previous match against West Indies, when they scored 317 for 8 with hundreds from Mandhana and Harmanpreet Kaur, their highest score in the history of the showpiece event.

Charlie Dean (4/23) was the bowlers’ choice for England, while Anya Shrubsole also picked up two wickets as the Indians failed to build a decent partnership. With three losses in all the matches so far, it was an urgent match for the title holders and four-time champions England.
