Won’t give even an inch of land to Maharashtra, says Karnataka CM Bommai

Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai on Monday urged Maharashtra politicians not to use the language bogey or border issue for their political survival, as he clarified that the state will not give even an inch of its land to the neighboring state. Mentioning that several Kannada speaking regions are in Maharashtra, he said that they are being considered for inclusion in Karnataka.

He was responding to Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar’s statement on Sunday that he would continue to support the fight for Marathi-speaking people living in the border areas of neighboring Karnataka to include those places in Maharashtra. Can you Bommai said, “There is a political crisis in Maharashtra, it is now, their entire government is at rock bottom, so they make a language bogey and raise the border issue. They do this to survive politically. Huh.”

Talking to reporters here, he said, Karnataka’s stand on the border issue is very clear, and the state is not going to bow down to anything. “We stand firm by our decisions, they (Maharashtra) also know it. I strongly urge the politicians of Maharashtra not to use slang or border issue for their political existence,” he said. Inch of land of Karnataka.

Maharashtra claims that the border district and surrounding areas of Belagavi were part of the erstwhile Bombay Presidency, but are currently a part of Karnataka on linguistic grounds. “As we celebrate 62 years of the formation of Maharashtra, we regret that the Marathi speaking villages of Bidar, Bhalki, Belgaum, Karwar, Nippani and other places in Karnataka could not be merged with Maharashtra. Citizens of Maharashtra and Its government is there. With their fight to be a part of Maharashtra. I assure that till these villages become a part of Maharashtra, we will continue to support their fight.’

The Maharashtra Integration Committee (MES), which is fighting for the merger of 800 villages with Maharashtra in the border areas of Belagavi, also submitted a memorandum of its demands to Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray sometime back. Claiming to be an integral part of Belagavi state, Karnataka has created Suvarna Vidhana Soudha, based at Vidhana Soudha, the state secretariat in Bengaluru, where the legislature session is held once a year.
