World Diabetes Day 2022: World Diabetes Day is observed every year on 14 November. It was first adopted by the International Diabetes Foundation and the World Health Organization in 1991. Diabetes is a chronic disease that occurs when the pancreas does not produce enough insulin. With an aim to spread awareness and education about the disease and how to manage it, the theme of World Diabetes Day this year is “Access to Diabetes Care”.

Continuing care and support to manage blood sugar levels can work wonders for diabetic patients. Unfortunately, many people still don’t have access to it. However, blood sugar levels can also be controlled with certain foods. Read on to know more:
- non starchy vegetables
You should include non-starchy vegetables in your diet. They have essential vitamins and minerals that can help control blood sugar, as well as keep you feeling full. The list includes, but is not limited to, asparagus, avocado, cabbage, celery, cucumbers, green beans, mushrooms, onions, tomatoes and zucchini. These are considered whole foods and contain true traces of sugar and high levels of fiber. Nuts are a rich source of fiber and most are low in digestible carbs. Choose almonds, Brazil nuts, cashews, hazelnuts, macadamia nuts, pecans, pistachios and walnuts. Take care not to overdo it. Include chia seeds and flaxseed in your diet. Chia seeds are rich in fiber and low in digestible carbs. They can help lower your blood sugar levels. Flaxseeds have been shown to improve blood sugar control and reduce your risk of heart disease and stroke. - Apple vinegar
It has myriad health benefits including being beneficial for your skin and hair. If you are diabetic, ACV may improve insulin sensitivity, reduce fasting blood sugar levels, and reduce blood sugar response by up to 20% when paired with a rich-carbs diet. Always take a teaspoon mixed with water to avoid harming your teeth and esophagus. - Strawberries
Strawberries are a rich source of antioxidants, fiber, vitamin C and magnesium. It can help reduce both cholesterol and insulin levels. The key is to always consume in moderation. A myth often associated with diabetes is that you should eat anything sweet. In fact, all you need to do is take care not to overeat and not cause a rise in blood sugar.
