carandbike: Sustainability and e-mobility will be playing more and more role in your plans. What are the goals for India here?

Shekhar Bhide (SB)In line with our global commitment, Mercedes-Benz is committed to reducing emissions across the entire vehicle lifecycle across its portfolio, developing a fully carbon-neutral passenger car fleet by 2039. In India, we aim to reduce, reuse and recycle. To reduce CO2 footprints through the design of our processes and initiatives. In addition, a number of green initiatives are being taken at our Pune plant. We are expanding our EV portfolio by adding another EV model, the EQS which will be produced locally. We aim to further expand our EV portfolio in India.

Mercedes-Benz designs its vehicles to be as resource-conserving and environmentally friendly as possible throughout their life cycle.

carandbike: How Mercedes-Benz India is redefining luxury with the planet in mind?

SB: In line with our global commitments, Mercedes-Benz is gearing up to go fully electric by the end of the decade, where market conditions permit. From 2025 onwards, all newly launched vehicle architectures will be electric only and customers will be able to choose an all-electric option for each model made by the company. All of our vehicles are at least 85 percent recyclable. We design our vehicles to be as resource-conserving and environmentally friendly as possible throughout their life cycle. At Mercedes-Benz, we have therefore set a goal of increasing the use of recycled materials by 40 percent by 2030, in line with our objective of conserving valuable resources.

carandbike: Can you shed some light on the expansion of the EQ range in India and how it will fit in with the company’s global EV strategy?

SB: We will be expanding the EQ range by adding our top-end luxury EV, the EQS. The EQ range will be further expanded in India as more global EVs make their debut depending on the market demand and viability.

carandbike: Are there MBI employees who practice sustainability by integrating green practices into their daily lives?

SB: Our employees are at the core of our sustainability practices. They are active participants in our initiatives such as resource negotiation, proper disposal of e-waste, and composting among others. They play a vital role in maintaining the ecological balance of our plant complex, which houses 125 species of plants and animals. To take care of them, we regularly arrange ‘eco walks’ with forest experts who help them understand the species of flora and fauna in the plant.

carandbike: Can you share some insights on developing green concepts globally and locally?

SB: MB India aligns its goals of sustainable growth and adoption of sustainable solutions based on our parent company Mercedes-Benz AG. We practice zero discharge of waste water in public drains. We generate 3.6 MW of electricity from the solar panels installed in the Chakan plant. We maintain the ecological balance of our plant complex which has 125 species of plants and animals. We are striving to expand the electric vehicle portfolio, and finally, afforestation within Pune district is an important part of our CSR initiatives.
