After its success in Mumbai and Pune, Banyan Tree brings to the World Jazz Festival in Bengaluru this year

For its second edition, the World Jazz Festival in association with Banyan Tree and the Netherlands’ Amersfoort Festival arrives in Bengaluru on 3 June. Artists from Netherlands, South Africa, Spain, USA and India will participate in the event.

The World Jazz Festival of the Banyan Tree, started in 2020, aimed to bring world-class jazz to India. “We have been to some jazz concerts abroad and when we attended the Amersfoort Festival in the Netherlands we thought it would be a great idea to bring that beautiful performance to India as well. We know for a fact that there is a huge number of people here. There are people who like this genre of music,” says Nandini Mahesh, one of the directors of Banyan Tree.

While Mumbai-based Banyan Tree has brought Hindustani, Carnatic and Fusion concerts to Bengaluru, this is the first time they will be presenting a jazz programme. “Bengaluru has a special audience when it comes to appreciating different genres of music. It is really heartwarming and when we see their response all the efforts seem worthwhile,” says Nandini.

Talking about the artists who performed for this edition, Nandini says, “Each one is a master of their chosen art. Alexander Beets and Saskia Laru and their band, one of the directors of the Amersfoort Festival, were part of the first edition and will return again this year. Saskia was a huge hit in Mumbai – she was mesmerizing and wonderful on stage as she interacted with school children at another event. ,

According to Nandini, Prasanna also known as Guitar Prasanna is as comfortable performing classical Carnatic as she is with a rock ‘n’ roll band. “She is like a chameleon; He gets adapted to whatever style he wants to play. It’s a rare talent,” she laughs.

The Alexander Beats quintet featuring Paul van Kessel and Nathalie Schap, Saskia Laru Band and Prasanna will perform for the World Jazz Festival on June 3 at the MLR Convention Center, JP Nagar in Bengaluru from 7.30 pm.

The World Jazz Festival will continue on June 4 and 5 in Mumbai.
