The theme of World Malaria Day this year is “Time to deliver zero malaria: Invest, innovate, implement.” With regard to this issue, WHO will focus on the third “i” of implementation, in particular on how important it is to use existing tools and techniques to reach marginalized groups.

Some mosquitoes can spread dangerous diseases, so they aren’t just unwanted guests. To protect yourself from mosquito bites at home, it is advised to keep mosquitoes away from your home. Always keep in mind that it is best to try to keep mosquitoes out of your home in the beginning.

To prevent mosquitoes from developing on property and entering your home, just follow this simple list:

  • Keep your windows, doors, exit doors and chimneys in good condition.
  • To get rid of mosquitoes, treat indoor and outdoor surfaces with insect repellent.
  • On all exposed skin, apply a potent insect repellent containing picaridin or diethyltolamide (DEET).
  • Remove standing water around the house to prevent mosquito breeding.
  • Water in pet drinking bowls, bird baths and vases should be changed at least once a week.
  • To limit mosquito entry, make sure screens are in place, check and maintain water storage and rain collection systems.
  • Use mosquito nets when you are outside. They should be kept under constant surveillance.
  • In areas where mosquitoes rest, long-acting surface sprays can be used if mosquitoes are a significant problem. Spray dense, shady shrubs and trees near your home to zero in on these areas.
  • Do not spray any chemical near fish ponds. Always read the directions for using any pesticide safely.
  • Use sand to prevent water from pooling around potted plants.
