This year the FAO special virtual event will focus on the theme “Pulses for a Sustainable Future”. World Pulses Day: History

On December 20, 2013, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution (A/RES/68/231) declaring 2016 as the International Year of Pulses (IYP). The celebration was led by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations. The aim was to raise public awareness about the nutritional and environmental benefits of pulses.

As the International Year of Pulses was a great success, the potential of the crops to further achieve the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development was recognised. In particular, relevance was given to Sustainable Development Goals 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 12, 13 and 15. It proposed the observance of World Pulses Day to Burkina Faso.

In 2019, the United Nations General Assembly adopted 10 February as World Pulses Day.
