World Teacher’s Day: This is why India and the rest of the world celebrate Teacher’s Day on different dates

World Teacher’s Day is celebrated on 5 October, exactly a month after the National Teachers’ Day celebrated on 5 September in India. Both the days dedicated to teachers are celebrated on different dates to mark the two events. For India, Teachers’ Day is celebrated to mark the birth anniversary of its second President, Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan. World Teachers’ Day marks the anniversary of the adoption of the 1966 recommendations regarding the status, teaching practices and rights of teachers.

The 1966 ILO/UNESCO Recommendation on the Status of Teachers, which sets standards regarding the rights and responsibilities of teachers and the conditions for their initial preparation and further education, recruitment, employment and teaching and learning. World Teachers’ Day is co-organized in partnership with the International Labor Organization (ILO), UNICEF and Education International (EI).

Every year the theme of World Teacher’s Day is different. this year, The theme is ‘Teachers at the center of education recovery’. UNESCO, ILO, UNICEF and Education International said in a joint statement, “On World Teachers Day, we are not only celebrating every teacher. We are calling on countries to invest in them and prioritize them in global education reform efforts so that every learner has access to a qualified and supported teacher. Let’s stand with our teachers!”

Indian Teacher’s Day was started on Radhakrishnan’s birthday at the request of his students. When Radhakrishnan, a philosopher and teacher, took over as the Vice President, his students requested him to celebrate his birthday, to which he said that his birthday should be celebrated as a celebration for all teachers.

Since 1962 – the year he was sworn in as President of India – Teachers’ Day has been celebrated on his birthday to celebrate his work, a belief that he considered a “privilege of pride”.
