World Vegetarian Day 2021: Brands, Celebs Take Vegan Fashion Route

World Vegetarian Day is a day to remember that animals want to be free from suffering just like us, and not to turn into burgers or shoes,” expressed Sachin Bangera, Director of Celebrity and Public Relations, PETA India. World Vegetarian Day is celebrated across the world on 1 November every year a variety of fashion brands promote vegetarianism through their products.

This year, H&M has partnered with PETA Entities to launch its co-existing story, a collection of fashion forward womenswear, menswear, and kids wear, all made from innovative animal-free materials. “H&M is driving the vegan fashion revolution and yet another astonishing example of how advances in textiles have made vegan alternatives virtually indistinguishable from animal-derived ingredients and more ethically and environmentally.”

The Coexistence collection by H&M is made from FLWRDWN, a cellulosic material made with natural wildflowers and will feature comfortable puffer boots and jackets, padded trousers, and reversible quilted shoulder bags. VEGEA (an innovative vegan material made from grape skins, stalks and seeds discarded during winemaking) is used to make embossed vests and trousers, while ECONYL® fibers (a regenerated nylon manufactured from waste, such as fishing of nets and fabric scraps and others) appears in comfortable oversized knits. The collection also includes vegan makeup and children’s T-shirts that declare, “Speak up for the animals!”

Earlier this year, fashion house Karl Lagerfeld joined forces with model, actress and activist Amber Valletta to create a sustainable accessories collection for Spring 2021, featuring bags using vegan cactus leather. Closer to home, plant-based leather or pleather is seen as a great sustainable alternative. Malai, a vegetarian brand from Kerala gets its ingredients from coconut. As the winner of the Circular Design Challenge at Lakme Fashion Week in 2020, the brand aimed to create products that do not affect and harm the environment.

Similarly, fashion designers like Gaurav Gupta, Jade by Monica & Karishma, Pero Aneeth Arora, Shyamal & Bhumika, Reena Dhaka, Vikram Phadnis, Rocky S, Bloney by Akshat Bansal and many more took a pledge to go leather-free.

Speaking against cruelty to animals and encouraging everyone to be kind towards animals, is actor-producer John Abraham. The Satyamev Jayate actor was recently seen in an advertisement for Mercy for Animals India encouraging people to be kind to animals. The ad’s tagline read: “In a world where you can be anything, be good.”

Expressing his love for animals, John says, “Animals deserve our love, respect and freedom. Through this campaign, I am giving the message that the least one can do to help animals is to treat them well. I am excited to be a part of Mercy for Animals India campaign and assure you that I will always stand by the animals in need.

Other celebrities who have raised their voice against animal cruelty are Sunny Leone, Milind Soman, Adah Sharma, Harshvardhan Rane, Jacqueline Fernandez and many more. While Milind Soman and his wife Ankita Konwar showcased eight stylish outfits made without fur, leather, wool, exotic skins, cashmere, mohair or silk for PETA India’s fashion lookbook, Sunny Leone is the face of the I Am Animal label. She was An athleisure brand that does not use leather, silk or wool. The dyes used in the clothing do not contain glycerin or animal fats.

Billions of animals are killed every year to meet the demand for fast fashion. According to Bangera, data shows that wool, silk, alpaca wool and cow leather have a global warming effect that is three times greater than that of vegan fabrics such as polyester fabric or polyurethane leather.

In the end, it all comes down to us and how we can make a difference in the lives of the voiceless!
