WPL 2023: Delhi Capitals Beat Gujarat Giants As Shafali Verma And Marijan Kapp Shine

Delhi Capitals registered their third win in the Women’s Premier League by defeating Gujarat Giants at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai on Saturday.

DC restricted GG to 105 for 9 in 20 overs before making quick work of the target as they chased down the total in 7.1 overs with 10 wickets to spare.

Gujarat Giants won the toss and captain Sneh Rana decided to bat first as DC were asked to chase for the first time in the tournament.

South Africa’s Marizanne Kapp opened the bowling for the capital city team and she proved too hot to handle for the Gujarati women as she dismissed Sabbihineni Meghana in her second ball of the game.

She struck again as she dismissed compatriot Laura Wolvaardt in her second over and sent back Ashley Gardner in the very next delivery.

GG’s Dayalan Hemlata fell victim to Shika Pandey before Kapp dismissed Harleen Deol for 20 off 14 balls.

The South African took his fifth wicket of the evening as he dismissed Sushma Verma in a fine display with the ball. He ended the evening with impressive figures of 3 for 15 in four overs with 16 dot balls in his spell.

Pandey claimed two more wickets, while Radha Yadav took one.

After collapsing to a dreadful 33/6 in the seventh over of the game, Gujarat Giants did well to recover.

Georgia Wareham’s 22-run knock and Kim Garth’s unbeaten 32 off 37 balls helped the Giants cross the triple-digit mark and post a total of 105 runs for the loss of nine wickets in 20 overs.

Chasing 106, Delhi got off to a good start as Shafali Verma and Meg Lanning cleaned up the Gujarat bowling attack. The 19-year-old Indian got his team off to a brisk start by hitting Garth for three consecutive fours in the third over.

DC scored 57 runs without loss in the first 4 overs thanks to some flamboyant cricket from Shafali. The teenager completed her half-century in just 19 balls to register the second fastest half-century in the WPL.

Shafali struck a blistering 76 not out as Lanning put the finishing touches on a resounding win for the side from the capital as they finished the game without losing a single wicket and with around 13 overs to spare.
