Wrestling Federation of India unhappy with women wrestlers winning only two gold medals at CWG 2022

wrestling federation India (WFI) is disappointed with the performance of women wrestlers in the Commonwealth Games 2022, despite two gold medals.

India performed brilliantly in the wrestling events at the CWG 2022, with all 12 of their athletes winning medals in their respective categories. But, WFI didn’t mind as they expected more gold medals from women wrestlers.

“It was not a great performance by our women wrestlers. If you are not winning such a weak area, then what does it reflect on your performance.” A WFI official said

While the country celebrated a clean sweep by India’s athletes,

The federation felt that they sent one of the strongest contingents to the event and therefore expected more gold medals. While four of the six male athletes won gold medals, women with weaker competitors had just two.

“The national federation is not happy that the four Indian women wrestlers could not take advantage of the weak area,” he said.

The official said that they will review the performance of the players and see what went wrong in the tournament.

“We are going to sit with the wrestlers and review the performance. Anshu could not even make a proper attack against his old rival. Wrestlers should think about it. India is certainly a powerhouse in the Commonwealth Games, but I don’t think it reflects properly in our results,” the official said.

Among the women, Vinesh Phogat and Sakshi Malik won the gold medals, while Anshu Malik, who was also the gold medal favorite, returned with a silver in the 57kg category.

Pooja Gehlot (50kg), Divya Kakran (68kg) and Pooja Sihag (76kg) won the bronze medal despite a thin and weak field.

However, the male athletes put up some incredible performances, with Ravi Kumar Dahiya (57kg), Naveen Kumar (74kg), Deepak Punia (86kg) and Bajrang Punia (65kg) winning the gold medals.

Debutants Deepak Nehra and Mohit also made it to the podium with bronze medals for India in their respective categories.

Overall, India’s wrestling contingent became the most successful contingent at the Commonwealth Games 2022, winning one medal each but the road ahead is tough for everyone as they face huge challenges – Asiad and World Championship. Wrestlers will have to show their skills again in those tournaments.
