According to an AP report, a man stormed the stage at the Chautauqua Institute and began punching or hitting Rushdie as soon as he was introduced. The writer was carried or fell to the floor, and the man was stopped.
It is noted that former Booker Prize winner, Salman Rushdie had received death threats over the years after his book ‘The Satanic Verses’ was published in 1988.
Several netizens shared this shocking news on Twitter today. Responding to the news, author William Dalrymple tweeted, “A terrible day for literature, for freedom of expression and for writers everywhere. Poor poor Salman: I pray he doesn’t get hurt and quickly Be okay.”
Penn International tweeted, “We are deeply concerned by the news that Salman Rushdie, the former President of Penn America, was attacked just prior to his lecture at the Chautauqua Institution in New York. We condemn the attack and wish him a speedy recovery. Wish.”
Meanwhile, Rushdie’s new book “Victory City” is expected to be published on February 9, 2023.
