WTO’s agriculture pact tilted against developing countries: Goyal

Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said the agreement on agriculture in the WTO is fraught with deep imbalances, which favor developed countries and have tilted rules against many developing countries.

The Minister said that historical disparities and imbalances must be corrected to ensure a rule-based, fair and equitable system.

Shri Goyal said this while addressing the G-33 virtual informal ministerial meeting. Out of the total 47 members of the G-33, representatives from 21 countries, including India, took the stage to make a brief intervention.

Shri Goyal said that the G-33 should strive for positive outcomes on a permanent solution to public stockholding for food security purposes, which was of utmost importance, expeditiously finalizing a Special Protection Mechanism (SSM), and domestic support. But a balanced result.

The minister urged members to work collectively to maintain the cohesion of the G-33 alliance and strengthen it by reaching out to other like-minded developing groups to secure their support for a fair, balanced and development-focused outcome on agriculture. urged to do 12th Conference in Geneva.

The meeting concluded with the adoption of the G-33 Joint Ministerial Statement, which reaffirmed the WTO’s commitment to the early resolution of essential issues in agriculture.
