Lucknow: The Uttar Pradesh government on Friday appointed senior IAS officer Avnish Awasthi, who retired on August 31, as advisor to CM Yogi Adityanath till February 2023, putting an end to all speculation about his new role.

The appointment of Awasthi, a confidante of the chief minister, was confirmed by Governor Anandiben Patel after the creation of a ‘temporary’ post of advisor.

A senior government official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told ThePrint that this is the “first post-retirement appointment” of an advisor to a chief minister in UP in recent years. “Earlier also, officers approaching retirement have been appointed in advisory roles. But they are usually appointed before retirement or on the day of retirement,” the official said.

According to senior government officials, Awasthi, a 1987-batch IAS officer who is seen as the most powerful bureaucrat in the state who sends 80 MPs to the Lok Sabha, “will advise the chief minister on administrative matters”.

Prior to his retirement, Awasthi was looking after the functioning of several important departments like Home, Secrets, Energy, Religious Affairs etc.
