The Kisan Mahapanchayat has sought permission to hold a sit-in protest at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi.

The Supreme Court on Friday hit out at farmers protesting the Centre’s three agriculture laws at various Delhi border points, saying they “strang the entire capital (Delhi) and blocked highways”. The apex court made this stern remark on a petition by the Kisan Mahapanchayat seeking permission to hold a sit-in protest at Jantar Mantar.

A bench of Justices AM Khanwilkar and CT Ravikumar said, “This celebration must stop. You have blocked highways and roads. You have strangled the city and now you want to protest by coming inside the city.”

The top court said, “Once you approach the courts to challenge the laws, what is the point of continuing the protest. If you have faith in the courts, instead of protesting, move it for urgent hearing.” ”

The farmers’ organization argued in court that it was the police who blocked the highways

“We have not blocked highways, police have done it. We are seeking permission from Delhi Police to protest at Jantar Mantar as it was given to the United Kisan Morcha,” the lawyer representing the farmers’ organization said.
