You have to take tough decisions, says Gautam Gambhir on dropping Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma for T20 World Cup 2024

Keeping T20 World Cup 2024 in mind, Indian cricket team selection committee There are some major calls to take. India’s upcoming T20I squad for Sri Lanka’s series against New Zealand had one thing in common – no Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. The transition period for India’s shorter format side seems to have begun with the 2024 World Cup in mind. Former India opener Gautam Gambhir believes that the future of Rohit and Virat in T20 Internationals should be decided by the selectors.

“Yeah, it’s going to be a big call. But some other countries have made that decision, whether it’s England, they’ve really gone that way. They’ve really gone with a lot of power and a lot of young talent. When they were rebuilding their white-ball cricket. Australia and a few other teams have done the same.”

“Whether the selectors want to do that remains to be seen.” Rohit Sharma And for the next World Cup, Virat Kohli, he has to take that decision. But for me, if you are not part of the T20 series, and someone else grabs that opportunity, how difficult does it become for the selectors to drop that youngster?” Star Sports, the official broadcaster of India’s upcoming tour of Sri Lanka By.

Gambhir further asked what the selectors would do if the youngsters perform well in the T20s against Sri Lanka in the absence of Rohit and Virat.

“For example, if someone does really well at number three in this series against Sri Lanka, would it be fair if someone batting at number three is replaced by Virat Kohli? If someone scores runs at the top of the order If so, would it be appropriate?” Would it be appropriate to replace Rohit Sharma with that person?”

“For me, that question has to be answered by the selectors. But if the selectors want to look beyond Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli For T20 format, I think it is fine. Sometimes you have to take these tough decisions because you have to look ahead and prepare for the next T20 World Cup.”

With a lot of tweaks and changes for the Indian team in 2022, Gambhir does not want any kind of rotation with the Indian team in ODIs in 2023 as it is a 50-over World Cup year. Both Rohit and Virat are in the ODI team against Sri Lanka.

He said, ‘If you look at the 50-over World Cup, which will be held in India this year, then according to me nobody should take a break from the format. The same team has to play maximum number of matches till the World Cup. ,

“You can make some changes, like if you take a 15-man squad, you need 13 players who will be consistent in the playing XI till the World Cup. I hope the selectors learn from the mistakes made in the last two.” World Cup, and then players should not be given too many breaks, especially in the 50-over format.”

Veteran left-handed opener Shikhar Dhawan, who captained India in almost all the second ODI series since the break of the Covid-19 pandemic in March 2020, was ruled out of the series against Sri Lanka.

Dhawan, one of India’s key players in ODIs over the last ten years, scored 688 runs in 22 innings at a low strike rate of 74.21 in 2022. Furthermore, he scored only 18 runs in three innings against Bangladesh at a strike rate of 51.42.

Gambhir feels that it will be an uphill task for Dhawan to make a comeback into the ODI team. “Anybody can make a comeback. But according to me it will be very difficult for Shikhar Dhawan to make a comeback because you also have Ishan Kishan, Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill and KL Rahul.”

“It’s going to be tough for him because you can’t count someone out because as long as you’re playing cricket, you can have an extraordinary IPL because he doesn’t play first-class cricket anymore, which again is my It’s surprising for him. If he doesn’t play first-class cricket, it will be difficult for him.” (With IANS inputs)
