Youth without specific skills can derail country’s economy: Puducherry President

Puducherry President R. Selvam has stressed on the need to start skill development programs for the youth in the country.

Participating in the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association meeting held in Guwahati on Monday, the Speaker said that it is the responsibility of the government to develop the personal and professional skills of the youth in the country.

“Youth without relevant skills and knowledge can derail the economy and create more trouble for the country. If youth are appropriately skilled and absorbed in the job market, it can contribute to higher economic growth,” a statement quoted him as saying.

The central government had launched several skill development programs targeting school and college students. Mr Selvam said that it should be ensured that such schemes reach the downtrodden and needy people.

“Youth power is vital for the progress and stability of a nation. A country depends not only on the wealth and resources it has but also on the quality of its people and their intellectual mindset.”

The Speaker also stressed on the need to develop the skills of youth in rural areas. “We have to focus on those below average and poor youth who have very limited opportunities for education and employment,” he said.

Financial institutions and entrepreneurs should prepare customized plans to encourage them. “Governments have also got a huge responsibility to maintain their physical health. There is a need to promote sports events in the country to keep them physically fit.”
