11 MPs suspended from Rajya Sabha amid opposition protests

11 amidst opposition’s protest against the central government regarding inflation MPs suspended from Rajya Sabha during the ongoing monsoon session of Parliament,

Seven Trinamool Congress (TMC) MPs are among these 11 suspended MPs accused of indecent behavior.

In addition, 15 MPs will now be barred from attending the monsoon session.

It comes a day after Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla Action was taken against four Congress MPs.

Birla suspended four on Monday protesting congress members For the rest of the monsoon session amid continued disruption in Parliament proceedings by the opposition on the issues of high inflation and GST (Goods and Services Tax) on household essentials. Thereafter, the Lok Sabha was adjourned till Tuesday.

The MPs who stormed the Well of the House carrying placards were suspended under Rule 374(2) of the suspension motion on a “grave charge of gross disregard to the authority of the House and the Speaker”.

The suspended MPs include Manickam Tagore, TN Pratapan, S Jothimani and Ramya Haridas. Pratapan and Haridas are from Kerala and the other two MLAs are from Tamil Nadu.

This was the first time that members were suspended in the current session. The suspension expires at the end of the session but the four MLAs nominated by the Speaker can personally appeal to him to reduce the period.

Birla said if the members wanted to protest with placards, they could do so outside the House. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi requested Birla to disqualify the MPs who were carrying placards inside the House.

The opposition, led by members of Congress and Trinamool Congress, staged a protest inside the lower house of Parliament, adjourning till 3 pm after the lunch break.

Parliament proceedings have been disrupted continuously since the monsoon session began on July 18. Opposition MPs raised slogans and marched with placards to the Well of the House.

Congress leader Manickam Tagore moved an adjournment motion in the lower house to discuss imposition of 5% GST on items of daily use such as pre-packaged and labeled food grains, curd, butter and milk.
