5 killed in fire at two factories in Maharashtra

At least five people were killed and over 20 injured in two separate fire accidents in Maharashtra’s Nashik and Solapur districts on Sunday.

Two people were killed and 17 injured in a massive fire that broke out around noon at the factory of Jindal Polyfilm Limited in Nashik’s Igatpuri taluk. In another incident, at least three people were killed and three others injured after a fire broke out at a firecracker factory at Barshi in Solapur district.

Announcing a high-level inquiry into the Igatpuri incident, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde said that the government would give Rs five lakh each to the next of kin of the deceased and bear the expenses of the treatment of the injured. “It was a major accident. The fire is under control. I have spoken to the injured myself. The condition of two is said to be critical. Our priority was to douse the fire and carry out relief and rescue operations. The government will conduct a high-level inquiry into the incident Will get it done,” said Mr. Shinde.

Earlier, the Chief Minister, after speaking with officials at Deolali Air Force Station, launched a helicopter rescue operation as the fire was raging. The fire is expected to be completely brought under control by Monday, sources said.

In Solapur, there was a blast at a firecracker factory in Shirala around 3 pm, senior police officers and fire brigade officials rushed to the spot. Local administration said the death toll could rise.
