5 months, 5 exits: Kapil Sibal bids goodbye to sinking Congress, takes a look at others who walked for greenery

It was yet another nail, this time a seasoned nail, in the coffin of the Grand Old Party in the form of Congress leader Kapil Sibal – along with Samajwadi Party chief – on Wednesday. Akhilesh Yadav – Filed his nomination for the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections with the support of SP and announced that he has severed ties with Congress.

While the announcement did not surprise many, given that Sibal was part of a dissident group in the Congress – the G-23 – and had clarified his troubles with the leadership, the senior leader’s exit comes at a time when When the party is struggling to keep its flock together in infighting, a missing-in-action between the top brass and the BJP stalwart.

Sibal’s departure also draws attention to several big names who have left the Congress recently, the party having suffered five major defeats in the last five months. let’s take a look:

  1. Sunil Jakhar: Yet another old crusader, former Punjab chief Sunil Jakhar – who was instigated by the Congress leadership for criticizing former chief minister Charanjit Singh Channi – quit the party this month and joined the BJP. Jakhar said that his decision to break ties with the Gandhi family was not personal but in the interest of the stability of Punjab and the defense of the state. The Congress had decided to remove Jakhar from all party posts a fortnight ago on the recommendation of the Disciplinary Action Committee. The former Congress leader was considering his political options since then.
  2. Hardik Patel: After months of infighting in the Gujarat unit, Patidar leader Hardik Patel finally quit the Congress this month in yet another setback for the Grand Old Party, months ahead of the assembly elections in the state. In his letter, Patel launched a scathing attack on Rahul Gandhi, who had not met him separately during his recent visit to Gujarat. “When I met top leaders, they seemed distracted by their mobile phones and other issues rather than listening to issues related to Gujarat,” he wrote, adding that senior leaders in Gujarat are more interested in ensuring that “The leaders who come get their chicken sandwiches” compared to engaging with people during the trip.
  3. Ashwini Kumar: Former Union minister Ashwini Kumar quit the Grand Old Party in February, saying he “supports the larger national cause outside the party as best he can”. In his resignation letter to Sonia Gandhi, he said the move was “in line with my dignity”.
  4. RPN Singh: The former Union minister, close to Rahul Gandhi, quit the Congress and joined the BJP ahead of the Uttar Pradesh elections. Singh was Congress’s Jharkhand in-charge, but was reportedly marginalized in the party, which was not in favor of the Gandhi family. Talking to the media, he said that he was in Congress for 32 years but “the party is no longer what it used to be”.
  5. Amarinder Singh: After months of running with Navjot Singh Sidhu, the then chief of the Punjab Congress, former Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh left the Congress and founded his own party, the Punjab Lok Congress. The exit of the veteran resulted in the party’s defeat in the Punjab elections.
