5 of family killed in landslide due to heavy rains in Kerala

In the hilly areas of Kerala, it has been raining heavily for the last two days.

Idukki, Kerala:

Five members of a family were killed when a landslide hit their house due to heavy rains in a village near Thodupuzha in Kerala’s Idukki on Monday.

Police said that Kanjar resident Thankamma (80), his son Soman (52), his wife Shaji (50), their daughter Shima (30) and Devanand (5) died in the landslide in the morning.

In the hilly areas of Kerala, it has been raining heavily for the last two days.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted a yellow alert for all districts except Kasaragod on Tuesday.

In Kottayam district, Nedunkunnam, Karukachal, villages have been flooded and firefighters have been dispatched to evacuate residents.

Meanwhile, in Pathanamthitta district, some areas of Mallappally taluk experienced minor floods. Small streams in the villages of Mallappally, Anikad and Tholiyur are in spate.

Pathanamthitta District Information Officer said, “Water entered some houses and shops in Kottangal village of Mallappally taluk. A car was washed away in the water and locals tied it with a rope to a tree.”

Apart from this, the hilly areas of Malappuram, Kozhikode and Kannur districts have been receiving heavy rains for the last two days, but no untoward incident has been reported from there.

In Malappuram district, Olipuzha was spreading along its banks, forcing the authorities to relocate residents along the river to relief camps.
