On Friday, Google and Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai shared the difficult news with his employees. “We have made the decision to reduce our workforce by approximately 12,000 roles. We have already sent a separate email to affected employees in the US. In other countries, this process will take longer due to local laws and practices,” read the message .

Mr. Pichai said, “Over the past two years we’ve seen a period of dramatic growth. To match and fuel that growth, we’ve hired for a different economic reality than we have today.”

Alphabet’s job losses affect the company’s teams, including recruiting and some corporate functions, as well as some engineering and product teams.
