Acute back pain from overuse of air conditioners? what the experts say

‘One reason for lower back pain is excessive use of air conditioners’, warns a health expert during a medical conference in Lucknow. On Saturday, Dr. Deepak Malviya, HOD of Anesthesia at Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia Institute of Medical Sciences (RMLIMS), said that apart from sitting in the same posture for many hours, excessive use of air conditioners can also cause back pain.

Another reason for lower back pain excessive use of air conditioners, Due to this, sunlight falls less, due to which there is a deficiency of Vitamin-D in the body”, said Dr. Malviya.

He said that timely diagnosis, treatment and lifestyle changes can go a long way in providing relief from pain. Dr Malviya said, “It is observed that women experience more back pain as compared to men as they usually work for long hours in the kitchen or other parts of the house.”

According to the IPCC report, despite relying on technology, many people do not see Air Conditioning as comfortable or healthy. For some, the temperature at work or at home is too cold for others to accommodate.

For others, the overuse is intentional.

In a symposium organized to discuss ‘Chronic low back pain and minimally invasive pain and spinal interventions’, it was reported that lifestyle changes can provide relief from these back pain.

The warning comes on a day when the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has alerted that several states in India are likely to face severe heat waves. The IMD said that most parts of India, except the northwest and peninsular regions, are likely to experience above normal maximum temperatures from April to June.

The Meteorological Department has predicted an increase in above-normal heatwave days from April to June, especially over central, east and northwest India.

Most recent United Nations physical science report Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change predicted that extreme heat events over land will become 4 to 9 times more frequent and 1.9 to 5.1 degrees Celsius warmer this century.

People become attuned, physically and behaviorally, not to hot weather, but to a narrow range of relatively cold temperatures created by ubiquitous air conditioning.

Perceptions are due to poor air quality, excessively dry air and lack of fresh air, leading to minor health complaints such as cold, rhinitis and joint pain. Going from low indoor temperatures to outside heat is particularly unpleasant and is seen as a risk to health.
