An Adani group company has sought licenses to expand its power distribution business to more areas in Mumbai, including the country’s largest container port JNPT.

In an advertisement published in several city newspapers on Saturday, Adani Electricity Navi Mumbai (AENM) said it has approached the Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission (MERC) for a distribution license along with its listed parent Adani in certain areas of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. Have done transmission.

The company is aiming to obtain licenses for power distribution in the Mumbai suburbs of Mulund and Bhandup and Thane district, Navi Mumbai, Panvel, Kharghar, Taloja and Uran, exclusively in areas operated by state-owned Mahadiscom.

The group, whose assets include the Adani Ports business, is also vying to distribute power to the country’s largest container port JNPT, located near Navi Mumbai.

Parallel Distribution License application under the Electricity Act 2003 is the first step taken by any player. The application has been accepted by MERC on Friday, following which a public notice has been issued.

It said that the Adani group will serve more than 5 lakh consumers by the end of five years of getting the license.

The public notice states that Adani Transmission owns over 99% equity in AENM, while nominees of the listed company, including Pranav Adani, hold a minority stake.

Power industry veterans Anil Kumar Sardana, Rohit Soni and Mehul Rupera are the directors of AENM.

Adani Electricity has been distributing electricity in Mumbai for over four years and competes with Tata Power in the business. The company, which entered the fray after the over Rs 18,000-crore acquisition of crisis-hit Anil Ambani Group’s Reliance Energy, has not been able to increase its market share in its service sectors.
