Advocates from Mangaluru and other parts of Dakshina Kannada held a symbolic protest in the courts premises on Thursday to protest the amendment to the Karnataka Birth and Death Registration (Amendment) Rules.

Mangalore Bar Association President K Prithviraj said in a statement here that the state government has amended Rule 9(3) of the Rules to withdraw the power of registration of births and deaths from the Judicial Magistrate First Class and transfer it to the Assistant Commissioner. has done. sub Divisional magistrate.

With such an arbitrary decision, the state government has deprived the common man of a fast and simple process of registration of births and deaths a year after the incident.

He said that the Assistant Commissioner is already burdened with matters related to land revenue and other Acts. Applications for registration of births and deaths will only add to his burden and will take a long time for disposal of these applications.

“The new system will give new impetus to further corruption and delays (in the offices of assistant commissioners),” he said.

Mr. Rai said that these applications filed in the magistrate courts were being heard by the junior advocates. The government has taken away valuable professional work from junior advocates by amending the rules.

Association secretary Sridhar Yenmakaje told reporters that the chief secretary had failed to respond to the letter written by the association to quash the amendment. He said the advocates staged protests across the district when the government failed to respond.
