58 shifted to relief camps in Sulia, Kadaba taluka

Floods following heavy rains in Sulia and Kadaba taluks since Monday night have forced the Dakshina Kannada district administration to shift 58 people to four relief camps in the two taluks on Thursday.

Relief camps have been opened in Kalamkar and Sampaje in Sulia taluk and in Kukke Subrahmanya and Yenekallu in Kadaba taluk.

Among the people involved in the camps are 25 men, 24 women and nine children.

According to the Dakshina Kannada District Disaster Management Authority bulletin, 21 people were kept in Kalmakar, 12 in Sampaje, 19 in Kukke Subrahmanya and six in Yenekallu.

It said that in the 24 hours ended at 8.30 am on Thursday, seven houses were partially damaged and three houses were badly damaged due to rain and floods in two taluks.

With this, 722 houses have been partially damaged and 180 houses have been completely damaged due to natural calamities in Dakshina Kannada since April 1, 2022.

The bulletin said that 34 electric poles and two power transformers were damaged in the last 24 hours.

The district recorded an average of 30 mm of rain in 24 hours, while the normal rainfall was 35 mm.

Kadaba recorded 59.3 mm of rain, followed by Sulliya 57.1 mm, Belthangadi 29.5 mm, Moodbidri 19.3 mm, Puttur 11.6 mm, Bantwal 7.7 mm and Mangaluru 5.8 mm during this period.

The district has recorded 2,862 mm of rain since January 1, 2022, against the normal rainfall of 2,556 mm, the bulletin said.

Deputy Commissioner KV Rajendra on Thursday extended the holiday for Anganwadis, primary and high schools in Sulia due to heavy rains.

Several rivers, including the Payaswini and Kumaradhara, were in spate on Thursday in Sulia and Kadaba taluks.
